Caral

the first civilization in America

Caral is situated some 150 km north of today's Lima. Its location in the
Supe valley, about 25 km from the sea and surrounded by desert, was
linked to the possibility of irrigation from the river, which has
running water through the year. Caral was a centre of cotton farming.
The cotton was used in the production of fishing nets, which were traded
with the fishermen of the coastal villages.

The major pyramids of Caral.

The excavations of the last few years unearthed seven raised platforms
of pyramid shape, a small amphitheatre and many residental dwellings.
Cotton nets found in the residences allowed accurate carbon dating,
which places the construction period of Caral to 2627 - 2000 BC.
