Tonalli : MIQUIZTLI (death) ? Festival days : Coming soon ... The Old Moon God who started life as the lowly God of worms. Having been challenged to light up the world, Tecuciztecatl got a squeeky bum and chickened out paving the way for Nanautzin to jump right in and take the glory. You can't blame him. Light up the world did mean '/throw yourself onto a huge bonfire and burn to death so the people who are too scared to can have something to sunbath under/!' Ashamed at being out-done by the scabby one, Tecuciztecatl followed Nanautzin into the flames and came out the other side looking just as lovely as the new sun. Having two suns shining in tandem could have serious repurcussions so the Gods, disapointed and more than a little disgusted, threw a rabbit at the cowardly Tecuciztecat for reasons i'm not even going to try to fathom. This wiped the shine right of his face, dimming his light and making him look more like a moon, which was a stroke of luck because the Aztecs needed one of those too. Tecuciztecatl was left permanantly black and blue with a huge rabbit shaped bruise after this little incident, so now you know where the rabbit in the moon myth came from.
