I laid it on my desk and the next day as the sun steaked onto the stone, I noticed to my astonishment a series of drilled holes exactly in the shape of the big and little dippers. I knew it was the big dipper and little dipper because I used to teach young Webelows and Tenderfoots in the boy scouts how to recognise the stars for their merit badges. One of things that was clearly noticable was the fact that the big dipper has an extra star in the cup. I showed the stone to a collegue at work and he made a star chart from his computer. I took a photo of his star chart and then added orange dots to overlay the stars in powerpoint. The Star Chart with Orange Dots The next thing I did was to add blue dots in powerpoint to a copy of the photo of the big dipper little dipper stone. Blue Dots over the Drill Holes Finally I resized the dots from the sky map and the stone so the blue dots and orange dots could be displayed in about the same size and aspect ratio. I took the stone as well as others that were in the same batch of stones to San Jose State University for verification the anthropolgist on duty was Glen Wilson. Glen verified that indeed the stone was a carving of Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. He used a microscope and the differences in the colors of the patina to conclude that the holes were definitely man made. The conical shape of the holes indicated that they were probably drilled with a crystal such as quartz. Overlay of the Drill Holes and the Sky Chart It was readily aparent that the star chart and the stone were extremely similar with the exception of the additional star in the cup of the big dipper. I found a book on the Lakota Indian Star Knowlege and it states: "The Journey into the Spiritual World" When a Lakota dies, his or her material body returns to grandmother sacred below. The spirit rises up into the spirit world, returning to grandfather sacred above. It is important to note that while the spirit travels from a material to a spiritual dimension of existance, both of these realms are called "sacred". Formerly, there was a star in the center of the Big Dipper. Now, however, there is an opening or hole where the star was located. The Wenagi comes up into the spiritual world through this hole which was made when Fallen Star's mother dug out the first wild turnip. The four stars of the dipper (1,2,3,4) are called in Lakota either the "carriers" or the stretchers. Wicakiyuhapi is literally, "man carrier". Prayed to by the Lakota midwives. To Win, "Blue Woman", is a spirit who inhabits the area around the hole in the Big Dipper. To Win (or Tan Win, "Birth Woman") is called on to aid women in labor, easing the pain of childbirth. "Blue Woman" also assists the spirits of newly deceased humans in being born back through the hole into the spirit world.
