It is composed of two cycles of 13 and 20 days each. In the 13-day cycle, each day has a number associated with it, ranging from 1 to 13; in the 20-day cycle, each day has its own name. Here is a list of the day names and a close translation of their meanings: Day # Maya Name Translation Day # Maya Name Translation 1 Imix waterlily 11 Chuen frog/monkey 2 Ik' wind 12 Eb skull/tooth 3 Ak'bal night 13 Ben cornstalk/reed 4 K'an corn 14 Ix jaguar 5 Chicchan snake 15 Men eagle 6 Cimi death 16 Cib shell 7 Manik hand 17 Kaban earth 8 Lamat Venus 18 Etz'nab flint/knife 9 Muluc water 19 Cauac storm 10 Oc dog 20 Ahau lord These two cycles create unique day names for the 260-day period, which is called a tzolkin. Each of these days has a very significant meaning, which is determined by the name of the day and the astrology associated with the day. This calendar is used to correlate the gods to humans, to give people names, to predict the future, to determine dates for battle, to choose marriages, and to do many other things as well. This time period of 260 days is also the interval between Venus' role as the morningstar and the nightstar in our sky. Also, it is the gestation period for humans and the interval between the planting and harvesting of corn. This calendar is combined with the [6]haab to create the [7]Calendar Round.
