Each month has a specific name and the days are labeled from 1 to 20. This leaves five days at the end, known as uayeb, which is considered an unlucky period of time where danger and death were perceived. The only error in this calendar is the non-existence of the last ¼ day of the year. The solar year is actually 365 ¼ days long - we use leap year to compensate for this. The Maya had no such compensation. Here is a list of the names of the 18 months and some translations: Day # Maya Name Translation Day # Maya Name Translation 1 Pop mat 10 Yax green 2 Uo 11 Sak white 3 Sip 12 Keh red 4 Sotz' bat 13 Mak 5 Tzek 14 K'ank'in 6 Xul dog 15 Muwan owl 7 Yaxk'in new sun 16 Pax 8 Mol water 17 K'ayab turtle 9 Ch'en black 18 Kumk'u This haab cycle, which correlates to the 365 days that it takes for the earth to travel around sun, is teamed up with the [6]tzolkin to create the [7]Calendar Round.
