PATTERN RECOGNITION The work of Talbott et al. embraces hundreds of mythical themes imbedded in the substratum of human memory. At this level, Talbott insists, the memories of early peoples are integrally connected. Think about this. Imagine the memory bank of the entire human race to resemble a fabric in which each strand connects with every other strand, either directly or indirectly. At the level of substructure, the same pattern of weave repeats itself throughout the entire fabric. Talbott insists that at the grass roots of human memory there are no isolated ideas. All recurring ideas in the memory bank stand in a predictable relationship with each other. Consider these basic themes: Doomsday, Universal Monarch, Dragon, Hero and Mother Goddess. When stated simply, each may appear to stand as a separate motif. Yet in each case, one can verify the connection to each of the other themes in the primary cultures. In the case of the warrior-hero, for example, comparative analysis will verify the following relationships and many more: 1. The hero is born at the time of the Doomsday catastrophe. 2. The hero is born from the womb of the mother goddess. 3. The hero defeats the chaos serpent or dragon in the sky. 4. The hero restores the king of the world to his rightful place after the Doomsday catastrophe. As a rule, scholars who have explored the early history of civilization have never acknowledged this connectedness. Yet it is Talbott's claim that under certain defined conditions, one can draw dependable conclusions from ancient testimony, even if the testimony challenges modern belief. When the memories of widespread peoples, using different words and symbols, converge on the same underlying patterns, one must be willing to consider a common explanation. And the more unusual the converging details, the more significant is the fact of convergence. This insistence is based on fundamental principles of reasoning that must be carefully considered by anyone seeking to evaluate the Saturn theory.
