The Elorrietas revealed that, throughout the valley, there are enormous animal effigies, made up of whole mountainsides. Some are virtually natural; others have been created by the selective placement of agricultural terraces. All the animals depicted - including the toad, llama and condor - are also represented in the sky, in the Milky Way, as Inca animal constellations. And it is just these animals, says Dr Sullivan, whose antics in Inca myth encrypt the Inca knowledge of precessional time. To see the animations below, you will need a Quick Time plug-in. This effigy looms more than 300 metres (1,000 feet) above the valley floor and is more than half a mile across. Looking as if the bird is just lifting off, its neck and beak parts are made up of agricultural terracing. The condor, a carrion eater, was thought by the Incas to carry off the souls of the dead - and under the wings of this effigy are pre-Colombian graves. Unlike the other condor effigy, this one is completely natural, except perhaps for the eye. However, it also has pre-Colombian graves beneath it. The large rock outcrop in the centre represents the llama's fleece, and the hindquarters and hindlegs are made up of the terraces on the right.
