This actually does explain a certain amount of the variation in higher forms which we observe, but in no way explains the rise of humans from one-celled animals which, themselves, arose from dust which somehow simply got "lucky". For that, a nearly infinite chain of events would be required, and the number of catastrophies which Velikovsky or anybody else has ever postulated, is strictly limited and could not possibly suffice. Velikovsky apparently saw himself saving evolutionism from the evolutionists in something like the manner in which Franklin Roosavelt is said to have saved capitalism from the capitalists who were too stupid to save it themselves. This as I see it was a misconception on Velikovsky's part and indicates that he did not really realize how badly messed-up evolutionism really is. A better analogy would have been Gorbachov trying to save communism from the communists...
