      5 Rarity

    Only three more or less certain discrete timber circles have been
    recorded to date, although others currently unknown to the author
    may have been identified during the analysis of aerial photographs.
    This is undoubtedly an underestimate of what actually exists, but
    even so it is likely that timber circles represent one of the less
    numerous classes of Neolithic ritual/ceremonial monuments. A further
    three or four examples are known in England within henges or
    henge-enclosures.
