Nearly all of Canada’s iron ore production comes from the Labrador Trough area in northern Quebec. The country produces a variety of iron products including pellets, concentrates and sinter of different grades and qualities. In 2003 iron ore production was estimated at 33.2 Mt compared to 30.9 Mt in 2002. Iron ore is one of Canada’s single most important mineral products in terms of both tonnage and value. Since the closure in 1998 of the Algoma Iron Ore Division near Wawa, Ontario, nearly all of Canada’s iron ore production has been concentrated in the Labrador Trough, a major geological belt extending through northern Quebec and Labrador. Canada's major producer is the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC). Other major producers are Wabush Mines and Quebec Cartier Mining Company (QCM), each with a mine in the Labrador Trough. IOC operates a single open cast mine at Carol Lake near Labrador City, which has proven and probable reserves of 1 500 Mt grading at an average of 38.6 % iron. All three companies have capacity to produce 46 Mt per year (IOC and QCM – 20 Mt each and Wabush 6 Mt). QCM has a major shareholder in Brasilian MBR whose major shareholder is Caemi, one of Brasil's largest iron ore producers.
