Supposedly the plains Indians captured and tamed them and stated riding them in the early 1800's. Well, at least, nobody saw any Indians on horses before that time. And the Indians picked the smallest of the herds.. So that they called the Whiteman's horses "American Horse" and their horses "Indian Horses" although the Whiteman called them "Indian Ponies.' Deloria says, the horses were indiginous, they had not died out in the Americas. The Indians just never thought of riding them till they saw the Whites riding horses. /j
