According to mythology, the ring was aligned approximately 70 degrees from the equator, apparently passing between the Ursa Major and Ursa Minor constellations (the Big Bear and Little Bear). Twelve cultural regions out of seventeen include either or both constellations in their mythologies, with two other cultural regions designating either the northeast or northwest. There is no reference to any other constellation. This is an unusual correlation, strongly identifying the ring position in the sky, and verifying that it was viewed by many people. The seventeen cultures are organized as they appear in each of the mythology chapters.
